Green Heron on Anglesey, November 2005
As we were heading up the M6 near Preston after our very successful trip to Cornwall I got news that there was a Green Heron on Anglesey for its 10th day! I could not believe this, especially as I missed the Lincolnshire bird back in 2001. I just hoped the bird would stay until the weekend.
The following weekend we were heading back down the M6 towards North Wales. We arrived at Red Wharf Bay (once we found the place!) by late morning. It was a fantastic place, vast areas of sand and salt marsh. This place was popular with day-trippers, horsy types and dog walkers alike!I walked along the path to the edge of the salt marsh and joined the groups of birders who I hoped were already watching the bird! On arrival I was informed that the bird had become fairly elusive! After about a 30 minute wait I got brief views of this very striking bird. The bird showed for no more than a few seconds at a time. Although it was obviously great that I had seen the bird, it was incredibly frustrating that the bird was being so difficult!
Eventually the bird showed really well as it was feeding on the edge of a small pool. The heron was a really stunning individual and well worth the trip down.
Green Heron is a North American species, the Red Wharfe Bay bird was the 5th British Record.
Whilst watching the Heron, news broke of a Gray-cheeked Thrush in Hertfordshire…………..hmm I bet that one won’t be seen again…………………………………………………………………………………….
