3rd January 2010 – Leighton Moss etc

Roy and Jane arrived at mine just after 0830hrs ans we soon on our way southwards. We stopped off at Sizergh Castle hoping to see Hawfinch. There was no sign of any, however Nuthatch was some consolation. Next we visited a very frozen Leighton Moss where the birding Highlights were brief views of a Waterail, Peregrine, Long-tailed Tits and a reasonable selection of ducks.

Next we went to Kents Bank which was a fantastic site. There were masses of Pintail and Wigeon offshore; as well as Greylag Geese. There were also a few Red-breasted Mergansers present. A couple of Lesser Black-backed Gulls were also a nice bonus. A Little Egret was also present; but sadly no sign of the Great White Egret present the previous day.

Although it had not been the bird-filled day we had hoped for; the bright sunshine and snow covered scenery made the day one to remember.
